Wonder
Wonder R. J. Palacio Wonder, by R. J. Palacio is a beautiful and sob-worthy story. It is about a boy named Auggie, who has a physical deformity. Although from the outside, he describes himself as “to ugly to describe,” “bug-eyed,” and more, August still has the traits of a normal 11-year-old boy. For all of his life, Auggie has been home-schooled by his mom. That is until it’s time for 5th grade. When Auggie is scheduled to start 5th grade, he and his parents decide that he should start a new school. Although Auggie has a bullied beginning to his new journey, he soon finds true friends who still care for him even through the ups and downs. Wonder is a perfect book for kids and adults of all ages. It is great as a casual read, or a read-aloud in classrooms. Wonder has also been turned into a movie. Although the movie was hilarious and heartwarming, there were still dozens of elements that were not portrayed in the movie, but were in the book. I personally enjoyed the book more than watching the movie, although both were great entertainment. This book is perfect to teach kids the drastic physical differences from a kid’s point-of-view, as well as maybe opening a world of realistic-fiction reading.
