Seedfolks, by Paul Fleischman, is emotional, quick, and catching to readers. The story starts with a young Vietnamese girl who plants six Lima beans in a vacant lot in her neighborhood. With a suspicious Romanian women going down to the lot to check things out, a school janitor wanting to get involved, a Guatemalan family. Then Curtis, a muscle-bound man, trying to win back his love. A pregnant teenager. Amir from India, and so many more. The secluded and stereotypical community soon starts to sprout. Switching between thirteen different characters throughout the entire story, you feel the different their personalities and problems. The story is diverse, eye-opening, and will captivate readers from the first word.
Seedfolks, brings the characters to life. Although the book is short, it is diverse, emotional, and does not seem rushed. The story is perfect for adults, as well as children, and will be an exceptional read for any reader. The story teaches tolerance, and acceptance of all people, races, and stories. The story leads many great discussions and diversity, and coming together as one. You can see all thirteen characters slowly, but surely, come together as one. They go through hardship,triumphs, and become second families to each other.
