The Hate You Give

The Hate You Give

Angie Thomas

The Hate You Give, by Angie Thomas, is different, and will take readers on an emotional rollercoaster. Starr, the main character, is a sixteen year-old girl who lives in two worlds, the poor and the rich. The poor neighborhood where she lives, and the fancy prep school she and her brothers attend. The uneasy balance between the two worlds shatters when Starr witnesses her childhood friend, Khalid, get shot by a police officer. The worst part? They were both unarmed. Starr, as well her family suspects Khalid was shot, and Starr threatened, because of their race, African American. When Khalid’s murder becomes a national headline. Starr hears people calling Khalid a drug dealer, thug, or even a gang member. But at the same time, she sees her community protesting, and creating riots on the streets for justice. Cops, the local gang leader, and others, try to intimidate Starr and her family. The one thing that everybody can agree on, is that what REALLY happened that night? The only live person who can answer that question is Starr. But what Starr says, as well as doesn’t say can endanger her life, her family’s life, and Khalid’s reputation. The Hate You Give is emotional, and will leave readers thinking about it weeks after they are done.

The Hate You Give, is emotional and will leave readers with a new sense of depth of race/racism, and true friendship. I loved this book, both because of it’s plot, but also because it explains racism/race in an entirely different way that makes readers think about how it may, or may not relate to their lives. Most stories either show and explain political and racial points in a very effective story, or they are just amazing and compelling stories. You rarely find a book that explains as well as pleases readers. The Hate You Give is one of those rare gems. It explains parts of or world effectively in a way that doesn’t offend, as well as it is exciting and hooking. The story is about the aftermath of a horrible tragedy caused by another person, but doing nothing wrong. It shows complicated friendships, mixed race relationships, living in two different financial lives, and more. The Hate You Give, is fantastic, unforgettable, and powerful.
