Holding Up The Universe
Jennifer Niven
Holding Up The Universe, by Jennifer Niven, is a beautiful story about Libby Strout and Jack Masselin. Everybody thinks they know Libby Strout, who was once said to be “America’s Fattest Teen.” But nobody can see past the title. With her mother’s recent death, her father’s and her own grief, Libby feels alone. Everybody thinks they know Jack Masselin as well. Little do they know, Jack is unable to remember or recognize faces. Even his mother and brothers are complete strangers to him. When the both of them get mixed up in a high-school fight, they both end up having to go to school counseling together. They’re both furious, but then surprised. Because the more time they spend with each other, the less alone they feel. Not only do they become anchors and supports for each other, but they also come to the realization that, maybe anything is possible.
Holding Up The Universe is a beautiful story that expresses emotion and character. It is no secret throughout the story that Libby is fat, yet Jennifer Niven is able to create Libby into her own character. Libby is filled with confidence about her appearance, and she is strong although she has gone through so much pain. Jack also seems real and it’s hard to believe that the story isn’t true. Holding Up The Universe, is a beautiful story that will make you fall in love with it.
